A dislocation moving in a lattice emits lattice waves. The energy flow accompanying the lattice wave emission in a molecular dynamics situation was studied. About two thirds of the static free energy was emitted as lattice waves from the moving dislocation. Work done by the region around the dislocation helped to initiate the motion from the unstable equilibrium state under a small applied stress, or to compensate the energy emitted as lattice waves when the dislocation underwent long-distance motion under a larger stress.
