In order to analyze the formation of dislocation patterns in the early stages of monotonic and cyclic deformation, the sweeping of edge dipolar loops by gliding dislocations was examined using 3 approaches. Dynamic simulations demonstrated the efficiency of the mechanism (especially when it led to the formation of a mobile tripolar configuration) as well as its tendency to promote the formation of organized structures. The critical conditions for the formation of a tripole configuration were also studied by using simplified numerical and analytical methods. This led to the concept of a critical angle for the gliding dislocation.
