An explanation for the electroplastic effect was proposed. The increase in metal plasticity was attributed to a facilitation of dislocation de-pinning which was caused by the current-induced magnetic field. This mechanism permitted an explanation to be given for the principal features of the effect. These included its non-polarity, characteristic current density and dependence of the stress-drop upon current density and temperature.
