A review was presented of the resistance of such systems to the insertion of dislocations, and of the critical thicknesses up to which strained structures were stable. The effects of dislocation nucleation, and the dynamics of dislocation motion which led to strain relaxation in metastable systems, were also reviewed. In the case of metallic systems, the main features of interest were commensurate-incommensurate transitions. The theory of such transitions was reviewed for metallic systems and for epitaxial layers on graphite.
