Slow adatom diffusion on the periodic surface of the upper layer of a growing crystal that had not yet completely formed was considered. Island (cluster) motion was investigated as a factor that accelerates adatom diffusion and resulted in an entropy increase compared to the case of an already formed stationary substrate layer. The diffusion coefficient, entropy, and the effective temperatures that characterize these properties of the substrate were introduced.
