Total energies for intermediate truncated stacking-fault tetrahedra were calculated. The effect of local stress fields upon the stability of the tetrahedra was considered. The results were presented in a form that could be applied to any face-centered cubic metal. These results did not agree with previous treatments of the same problem. Stacking-fault energies could be estimated from the calculations. Application to the results of Loretto et al. (1965) led to predictions of 17mJ/m2 for silver, 55mJ/m2 for gold and 73mJ/m2 for copper.
