Dislocation dissociation in the DO23 structure of Al3Zr was studied using contrast transmission electron microscopy methods, confirmed by a precision analysis of low-angle grain boundary characteristics. In particular, it was shown that the partial dislocations could be of ¼[001] and ¼[221] type. Noting that b = ½[111] was a possible Burgers vector for a perfect dislocation, it was shown that two types of dislocation dissociation could be observed. These were dissociation into 2 partials having a total displacement of ½[111], and dissociation into 4 partials having a total displacement of [001].
