It was found that plastic deformation of monocrystalline 6H-type material during micro-indentation at 20 to 1200C was due to the basal splitting of Shockley dislocations having a Burgers vector of a/3[1¯1•0]-type. Energies of 45 to 65mJ/m2 were found at room temperature, and of 0.05 to 2.5mJ/m2 at 800 to 1200C.
