It was shown that edge dislocations in Mo (and presumably in other body-centered cubic transition metals), as modelled using a Finnis-Sinclair potential, could support stable dislocation kink-pairs. Motion of the edge dislocation via the nucleation and migration of kink pairs could take place at a much lower stress than the calculated value of 0.006μ which was required for the translation of the rigid dislocation. Motion was expected to be athermal at temperatures above 10K.
