The effects of various parameters (Y2O3 concentration, stacking periodicity, temperature) upon oxygen ion diffusion in strained YSZ/CeO2 superlattices were optimized in order to understand the mechanism. It was found that the self-diffusion coefficient of O ions attained a maximum at about 9.1mol%Y2O3, and that an increase in CeO2YSZ ratio enhanced the oxygen ion diffusion (table 25). The activation energy (9kcal/mol) for oxygen ion diffusion in the YSZ/CeO2 superlattice was lower than that (15kcal/mol) observed in bulk yttria-stabilized zirconia.
