The adsorption of polyethylene with various chain-lengths on a silicon (111) surface was studied. The chains all took up two-dimensional adsorption configurations on the surface. The adsorption energy of various chain lengths was described by a linear function, and the average adsorption energy per segment was -1.58 kcal/mol. The diffusion coefficient of the chains scaled with the degree of polymerization (N) as N-3/2.
