The mechanism of the surface migration of adatoms on photo-irradiated diamond (001) surfaces was investigated by the method of quantum-chemical calculations. The results obtained clearly showed that the surface migration of an adatom was enhanced in the case that the exposure of surfaces to light will produce positive holes or electrons which were concentrated at the surfaces; i.e., the activation

energy for the migration of an adatom along the dimer row on the positively or negatively charged surface was smaller than that on the electrically neutral surface.
