Weak-beam transmission electron microscopic observations of dislocation core structures were combined with image simulation. The use of such simulations permitted the interpretation of intensity peaks, in weak-beam micrographs, in terms of real partial dislocations and splitting distances. The corresponding fault-plane energies could then be deduced. Critical consideration was given to the main parameters which had to be included in the calculations, and to the validity of such calculations.
