Integral and spectral cathodoluminescence of electron irradiated ZnO ceramics was studied in a scanning electron microscope-based cathodoluminescence measurement system. Irradiation with 0.8MeV electrons was not found to influence the cathodoluminescence behaviour while irradiation at 2.6MeV produces quenching of luminescence. The results were explained in terms of vacancies generated during the irradiation. The observed cathodoluminescence quenching was attributed to damage in the zinc sub-lattice.
