The surface diffusion of Li was studied by using electron microscopy to detect p-n junctions. It was shown that the same mechanism and activation energy for surface diffusion was relevant to both mechanically and chemically polished specimens. The pre-exponential factor was higher for mechanically polished specimens, due to the higher degree of damage which was introduced:

mechanical:     D (cm2/s) = 1.3 x 105 exp[-1.13(eV)/kT]

chemical:     D (cm2/s) = 1.3 x 104 exp[-1.13(eV)/kT]
