Stacking faults on basal and prismatic {1¯2•0} planes in vapour-grown zinc oxide ribbon crystals were studied by transmission electron microscopy. Basal faults were shown to have the fault vector of ½c+p, whereas diffraction contrast experiments indicate that the ½c+3/2p fault vector normally associated with prismatic faults in the wurtzite structure was not a possible fault vector in this material. Atomistic considerations suggested a fault vector ½c+(1/√3)a.
