Measurements of the energy distribution of electrons thermionically emitted from (110) were analyzed in terms of a standard free electron model. This revealed a sizable discrepancy (≈25%) between the measured temperature of the LaB6 emitter and the temperature required by the best theoretical fit to the data. Energy distributions of electrons photo-emitted from LaB6(110) using a focussed Ar ion laser were also presented. Analysis of the photo-emitted energy distributions showed that the high current density obtained by laser illumination occurred at substantially lower temperatures than did thermionic emission.
