The serial sectioning technique was used to study 54Mn diffusion in ultra-pure crystals and pure crystals. The diffusion of Mn2+ in intrinsic material was found to proceed via 2 distinct mechanisms. At 320 to 430C, the results could be described by:

D (cm2/s) = 2.9 x 100 exp[-1.20(eV)/kT]

At 76 to 320C, the results could be described by:

D (cm2/s) = 1.8 x 10-5 exp[-0.59(eV)/kT]

The results for the entire temperature range could be described by:

D (cm2/s) = 42 exp[-1.37(eV)/kT] + 1.3 x 10-5 exp[-0.58(eV)/kT]

The best linear fit to the solute diffusion data ([348] to [365]) yields:

Mn: Ln[Do] = 0.87E – 22.7 (R2 = 0.99)
