It was found that both the effective charge number, Z*, and the diffusion coefficient decreased upon adding Ti or Cr, but were not much affected by Fe or Mo (tables 182 and 183). A model for H-trapping by substitutional elements, which had previously been introduced in order to account for a decrease in diffusivity due to solute additions, could not explain the decrease in Z* in a straightforward manner. A change in the electronic structure, due to alloying, was suggested to be responsible for the decrease.
