Anion self-diffusion in single crystals was studied by using serial sectioning techniques, with 36Cl tracers, and electrical conductivity measurements (figure 29). The diffusion data could be explained in terms of a single vacancy mechanism, plus an additional contribution from vacancy pairs. Over the temperature region which was investigated, the contribution of vacancy pairs to the diffusion was approximately equal to 50%.
