The experimental conditions for obtaining accurate results, using the serial sectioning technique, were investigated. The diffusion equation was solved for a system in which the deposited radioactive layer had a definite thickness, and the self-diffusion coefficient in the deposited layer was different to that in the specimen. The conditions under which the diffusion profiles coincided with Gaussian or complementary error-function curves were defined in order to obtain accurate diffusivity values. It was concluded that the diffusivity of 36Cl in single crystals at 400C was equal to 5.5 x 10-9cm2/s.
