The existence of metastable planar defects was revealed by using the method of γ-surface construction. The defects arose as a result of shifts of the half-crystals, through vector multiples of 1/6<¯111>(211), in ordered body-centered cubic alloys having B2, B32, C11b or D03 superstructures. It was shown that lattice relaxation near to defects, which had been created by shifts in opposite directions, proceeded in differing ways.
