The diffusion of S in commercial-grade 36wt%Ni austenitic alloy was determined at 600 to 1000C by means of Auger electron spectroscopic studies of surface segregation. It was found that the bulk diffusivity was given by:

D (cm2/s) = 2.68 x 101 exp[-261.4(kJ/mol)/RT]

This activation energy was slightly higher than the values which were associated with S diffusion in pure γ-Fe, pure Ni or Fe alloys which contained 25, 50 or 75%Ni. The present value was suggested to reflect a vacancy diffusion mechanism.
