Diffusion coefficients for the interdiffusion of Bi in liquid Sn were determined using the thin-layer long-capillary technique. The effect of 0.5, 0.8 and 1.6mm diameter capillaries upon the apparent diffusion coefficient was investigated. Because of the agreement of the results for 0.5 and 0.8mm capillaries, up to 700C (and the 1.6mm capillaries up to 600C), it was concluded that the interdiffusion coefficients were accurate at 300 to 700C. The interdiffusion coefficient for the diffusion of Bi in liquid Sn could be represented by:

D(m2/s)  = 3.4 x 10-8exp[-13600/RT]

The results showed that Bi diffused in Sn at a lower rate than did Sn itself.
