The diffusivity of O was determined, at 973 to 1273K, by using potentiostatic and electrochemical methods. It was found that the results could be described by:

D (cm2/s) = 8.7 x 10-4 exp[-4.5(kcal/mol)/RT]

The data were of the same order of magnitude as the self-diffusion coefficient for the liquid metal, but were some 2 orders of magnitude greater than some previously published data. The ratio of the O diffusivity to the self-diffusivity was related to the enthalpy of formation, per mole of O, of the oxide at 298K.
