The kinetics of the reaction of H with Zr were studied at 600 to 900C by using a weight-gain method in an Ar atmosphere. The rate-controlling step of the reaction was the diffusion of H through the Zr lattice. The diffusion of H in γ-ZrH was studied at 660 to 850C, and the results were found to be described by:

D (cm2/s) = 6.20 x 10-3 exp[-15800/RT]
