The stacking-fault energy of fcc metals was estimated from the diffraction contrast of faulted dipoles. The electron-microscope image contrast of these dipoles was calculated as a function of the geometrical parameters of the dipoles, and of other parameters (depth, excitation error, foil thickness). Faulted dipoles were observed in micrographs of Ag, and their image widths were measured. An upper limit for the stacking-fault energy was determined from the maximum image width by using the present contrast calculations and stability calculations. The result for Ag was 22mJ/m2.
