The solid/liquid surface energy and grain-boundary energy were measured by using a direct method. It was found that the average solid/liquid surface energy was 149mJ/m2 while the average grain-boundary energy was 295mJ/m2. The results were compared with those obtained for the Al-Si (169 and 336, respectively) and Al-Cu (163 and 325mJ/m2, respectively) systems.
