Nanocrystalline specimens were prepared by using the gas deposition method. As rearrangement of nanocrystalline Au particles on the specimen surfaces occurred just after landing, the grain-boundary energy of 300mJ/m2 was comparable to the 450mJ/m2 reported for bulk polycrystalline Au, and the concentration of vacancy-type defects was about 1.5 x 10-3 in the as-deposited state.
