The stacking-fault energy of fcc metals was estimated from the diffraction contrast of faulted dipoles. The electron-microscope image contrast of these dipoles was calculated as a function of the geometrical parameters of the dipoles, and of other parameters (depth, excitation error, foil thickness). Faulted dipoles were observed in micrographs of Ni-Co alloys, and their image widths were measured. An upper limit for the stacking-fault energy was determined from the maximum image width by using the present contrast calculations and stability calculations. The results for Ni-40%Co. Co-40%Ni and Co-33%Ni were 78, 49 and 47mJ/m2, respectively.
