It was found that H diffused into Pb β"-alumina during the ion-exchange of Na β"-alumina. It was deduced that the H resided in the lattice as OH- groups, with the protons bound at several types of site. The intrinsic diffusion coefficients for H and D were determined by analyzing the infra-red absorption profiles after isotope exchange. It was found that the overall results could be described by:
D (cm2/s) = 2.67 x 10-3 exp[-0.54(eV)/kT]
