Phase-sensitive radiography, based on the lateral coherence of beams from third-generation synchrotron radiation sources, was combined with monochromatic X-ray topography in order to investigate structural defects and inhomogeneities in the bulk of icosahedral single quasi-crystal grains. Loop-shaped defects which had previously been observed by using X-ray topography were correlated with the holes and second-phase precipitates which were revealed by phase radiography.
