It was recalled that the addition of impurities to V could markedly enhance its swelling. However, the swelling was accelerated only by undersized, and not by oversized, impurities. A mechanism was proposed here for the acceleration of swelling. This was based upon the influence of an impurity in affecting the elastic interaction of dislocations with point defects. It was shown that the segregation of impurity atoms at dislocations modified the dislocation bias. The sense of the bias correction was opposite to that of the impurity misfit. Such bias modification was expected to affect the swelling in qualitative agreement with existing experimental data on V alloys.
