A method was proposed, for treating interfacial misfit dislocation arrays, which was based upon the original Peierls-Nabarro concept. A simple and exact analytical solution was derived for the extended model, and this solution reflected the core structure and energy of the misfit dislocation; which depended upon the misfit and upon the bond strength. It was found that, only for misfits of less than 0.2, could the structure of the interface be represented by an array of singular Volterra dislocations; in agreement with atomic simulations. The interface energy and adhesive work could be estimated by inputting ab initio calculation data, thus showing that the method could provide a correlation between ab initio calculations and elastic continuum theory.
