Scanning tunnelling microscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy and low-energy electron diffraction were used to study various W- and C-terminated surface reconstructions on the sputtered/annealed (00▪1) surface. The W-terminated surface comprised a (v7 x v7)R19º W-trimer structure, a (v3 x v7) reconstruction which represented a transition structure between a (v7 x v7)R19º reconstruction and a (6 x 1) phase which consisted of a quadratic W overlayer on the first close-packed carbide-like C layer. The C-terminated (00▪1) surface consisted of a single graphitic C layer on top of the (6 x 1) structure.
