The effect of light upon dislocation motion, and the associated flow stress, was examined. A large increase in flow stress was observed for slip on the basal planes during irradiation. The results of experiments on the effect of light, slip-direction, strain-rate and temperature were described. Possible photoplasticity mechanisms were considered, together with methods for exploiting the photoplastic effect in reducing dislocation densities.
