The state of Li atoms in II-VI semiconductors was investigated by using the donor, 111In, as a radioactive probe atom in perturbed angular correlation studies. On the basis of an absence of InM+ - LiM pairing, and the simultaneous formation of InM+ - VM-- pairs, which was observed in all of the semiconductors, it was concluded that Li was incorporated interstitially as Lii+ (accompanied by a vacancy, VM--) rather than substitutionally, on the group-II site, as an acceptor, LiM-.
