The room-temperature vacuum deposition of Mn onto (110) CdTe surfaces which had been cleaved  in situ  led to interdiffusion when the metal coverage was less than 0.3nm. This was attributed to a partial Mn-Cd exchange reaction which occurred in the interface region, and gave a semi-magnetic semiconducting Cd1-xMnxTe surface alloy as the reaction product. The value of x depended upon the original Mn coverage.
