The atomic structure of the (313)-(5 x 1) surface was studied. On the basis of high-resolution scanning tunnelling microscopic images, a detailed structural model was proposed for the surface. The surface consisted of T4 adatoms, rest atoms. and re-bonded atoms; which also existed on other low-index surfaces. However, the surface reconstruction mechanism was different to those for (111)-c(2 x 8), (001)-(2 x 1), (101)-c(8 x 10) or (113)-(3 x 1) surfaces.
