It was noted that scanning tunnelling microscopic observations of halogenated (111) surfaces had revealed stacking-fault triangles as well as (7 x 7) structures without adatoms. Monte Carlo simulations here showed that these structures resulted from transformation from (1 x 1) structures to dimer stacking-fault structures; and not the reverse process.
