The OH- and OD- stretching frequencies in Mg-doped crystals were determined by means of infra-red absorption measurements. Two very broad bands, which were centered at about 3005 and 2228/cm, were attributed to OH- and OD-, respectively. Polarization data suggested that the OH- and OD- ions lay in the basal plane, as in the case of undoped crystals. The threshold temperature for the in-diffusion of deuterons was deduced, by annealing the samples in flowing D2O vapor; to be 1050K. At 1223K, the diffusion coefficient was equal to about 3 x 10-7cm2/s and the activation energy was 1.6eV.
