A method was presented for estimating, via Monte Carlo simulation, the most common diffusion mechanisms in 2-dimensional ordered structures. In the case of the diffusion of O ions in this high-temperature superconductor, several diffusion mechanisms were proposed and it was shown to what extent they depended upon the temperature and the concentration of diffusing particles. These results were compared with those found earlier on the basis of energy arguments. Additional trajectories were also found which were different to those reported previously for this system.
