The conductivity of La0.9Sr0.1Sc0.9Mg0.1O3 was studied, by means of impedance spectroscopy, in controlled atmospheres. The material was found to be a mixed conductor, with p-type conduction at high O partial pressures and combined proton and oxide-ion conduction at low O partial pressures. At temperatures below 800C, and low O partial pressures, proton conduction predominated. Above this temperature, the ionic conductivity was dominated by oxide-ion transport. The protonic transport number was estimated from the conductivities which were measured in dry and water-moistened gas. An isotope effect was observed upon using D2/D2O in place of H2/H2O.
