Crystalline and amorphous samples of Li1+xV3O8 were compared by using spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques; especially cyclic voltammetry at very low scan rates. The latter technique revealed the existence of well-defined site energies in the crystalline material. The amorphous samples gave rise to a broad energy distribution. It was found that the diffusivity of Li was greater in the amorphous material. It was also noted that the V-O distances were more homogeneous in the amorphous form, and that partial amorphization of crystalline material occurred upon Li+ intercalation.
