Powders which contained 3 to 8mol%Y2O3 and 0 to 20wt%Al2O3 were prepared by mixing commercial oxides or by using a co-precipitation method. It was found that the electrical conductivity of cubic ZrO2-Al2O3 composites decreased monotonically with Al2O3 content. However, in the case of tetragonal ZrO2-Al2O3 composites, the conductivity hardly varied, or perhaps increased, up to 10wt%Al2O3. At 1000C, the highest conductivity was 0.30S/cm for ZrO2-8mol%Y2O3, and this decreased to 0.10S/cm in the case of composites with 8mol%Y2O3 and 20wt%Al2O3.
