Electron probe microanalysis was used to monitor concentration profiles in couples between Zr and Cu. The smoothed concentration plots were then analyzed by using the Boltzmann-Matano-Heumann and Wagner methods. The interdiffusion coefficients which were obtained by using the 2 methods tended to agree. Only 2 of the 6 possible intermetallic compounds in this system were observed, and it was found that the data for these could be described by:

Cu4Zr:     D (m2/s) = 1.73 x 10-9exp[-73.6(kJ/mol)/RT]

Zr2Cu:     D (m2/s) = 3.12 x 10-7exp[-125(kJ/mol)/RT]
