By using Green's function and eigenstrain methods, an analytical expression was derived for the elastic displacement fields which were produced by a dislocation in an icosahedral quasi-crystal. Calculations were performed for the special case in which the line direction of the dislocation was parallel to a 5-fold axis. By combining this expression with a structural model for icosahedral Al-Pd-Mn, the atomic structure of straight dislocations was deduced and the corresponding high-resolution electron microscopic images were simulated. These were the first simulations, of dislocations in an icosahedral quasi-crystal, which had been performed by using a realistic structural model. A series of dislocation images was presented for various 2-fold Burgers vectors which had been observed experimentally. An analysis was made of the fringe patterns which were obtained by inverse Fourier transformation of the simulated images.
