On the basis of Stroh's formalism of anisotropic plane linear elastostatics, an explicit linear relationship was demonstrated to exist between the stress field of a line force and the displacement gradients of a straight dislocation. This reciprocal relationship had previously been derived by using arguments that were based upon thermostatics (Moutier's theorem) and Betti's theorem of linear elasticity.
