A general theory for the X-ray line-broadening which was caused by dislocations was presented. It was shown that the leading terms which determined the shape of the broadened line profile were independent of the dislocation distribution. The intensity distribution could be characterized by average parameters of the dislocation configuration, such as the dislocation density and its fluctuations. A generalized form of Wilson's variance method was proposed for the determination of these parameters.
