It was shown that edge dislocations in Mo, as modelled by using a Finnis-Sinclair potential, could support stable dislocation kink pairs. Motion of the edge dislocation, via the nucleation and migration of kink pairs, could take place at a stress that was much smaller than the calculated value (0.006μ) which was required for translation of the rigid dislocation. It was expected to be athermal at temperatures above 10K.
